What is cupping?
Cupping therapy is an ancient medical treatment that relies upon creating a local suction to mobilize soft tissues, blood and lymph flow in order to promote healing. Dry cupping is used specifically in physical therapy as a form of soft tissue mobilization by using myofascial decompression to release tissue restrictions in skin and muscle. It is thought to promote local circulation in the cupped region.
Will I leave with red marks and bruising?
At re+ACTIVE, we perform functional cupping. In some cases we find it necessary to leave the cups in place for a period of time, which is what leads to the bruising. Most of the time, the cups are moved around on the skin in the direction of the restriction. This leaves much less chance of bruising and redness from your treatment.
As with any manual technique, cupping is always followed by functional movement training and corrective exercises.
